Picture-in-Picture Video Overlays

Picture-in-Picture Video Overlays

Layer a video clip on top of your main video: a second camera angle, a screen recording, a reaction clip. Position and resize on the canvas, set rounded corners, and add fade effects. When adjacent video overlays have different positions, they smoothly interpolate between them.

How It Works

  1. Create a video overlay: open the overlay creation dialog and select “Video.” Import a video file from your file system.

  2. Position and resize: the video clip appears on the canvas as a picture-in-picture window. Drag to move it. Pull corner handles to resize. The position and size are stored as percentages for resolution independence.

  3. Set roundness: choose from four levels: none (sharp corners), small, medium, or large (fully rounded). The border-radius matches the visual seen in the preview.

  1. Add fade effects: configure fade-in and fade-out durations. Set opacity. The overlay can fade in smoothly rather than appearing abruptly.

  2. Control timing on the timeline: drag the overlay’s timeline bar edges to set when the PiP clip appears and disappears.

  1. Adjacent overlays blend: when two video overlays are back-to-back on the timeline, Velocaption interpolates position, size, and roundness between them over ~333ms.

Key Details

Adjacent overlay interpolation. When one video overlay ends and another begins (back-to-back), position, size, and roundness smoothly transition between the two. This avoids jarring jumps when switching camera angles or PiP positions.

Roundness selector is visual. The four roundness options are shown as clickable boxes with increasing border-radius: you see exactly what each level looks like before selecting.

Video overlays compose with everything. PiP windows render alongside captions, text overlays, image overlays, and audio overlays. Layer order follows creation order.
