Add Background Music to Video
Layer background music or sound effects under your video’s original audio. Control volume, set smooth fade-in and fade-out curves, and trim the start point. Audio loops for the entire video duration. A built-in library of music tracks is included.
How It Works
-
Add an audio overlay: open the overlay creation dialog and select “Audio.” Choose from the built-in audio library or import your own audio file.
-
Set the volume: use the volume slider (0-100%) to balance the background music against your video’s original audio. 20-30% is a common starting point for background music.
-
Configure fade-in and fade-out: set the number of frames for each fade. Fade-in ramps the volume from silence to your target level. Fade-out ramps down to silence before the video ends. Values are clamped so fades can’t overlap.
-
Trim the start: skip the first N seconds of the audio file. Useful when a track has an intro you want to bypass.
-
Preview on the timeline: the audio overlay shows an envelope trapezoid on its timeline track. The trapezoid’s shape visualizes the fade-in ramp, the sustained level, and the fade-out ramp.
- Play to preview: audio streams via a local HTTP server during preview. No re-encoding needed: you hear the result immediately.
Key Details
Audio always loops. The audio file loops continuously for the entire video duration. You don’t need to worry about the track being shorter than the video: it repeats automatically.
Fade values are in frames, not seconds. At 30fps, 30 frames = 1 second of fade. The system clamps fade durations so the fade-in plus fade-out never exceed the total video length.
No re-encoding for preview. Audio streams through a local HTTP server during editing. The export path uses Remotion’s <Html5Audio> with interpolated volume for frame-accurate fade rendering.
What’s Next
- Text Overlays: add titles and callout text
- Image Overlays: add logos and watermarks
- Export Captioned Video: the audio overlay is baked into the final export
