How to Resize a Video Online

Drop your video above, pick a target resolution (480p, 720p, or 1080p), and choose a fit mode: contain, cover, or stretch. The tool re-encodes your video at the new dimensions and gives you an MP4 download. No upload. No account. Everything processes locally.

Resizing is common when you need to downscale 4K footage for faster sharing, match a platform’s resolution requirements, or reduce video file size by lowering the pixel count. For even smaller files, combine this with the video compressor.

Contain, Cover, and Stretch: Fit Modes Explained

“Contain” fits the entire video inside the target resolution, adding black bars (letterboxing or pillarboxing) if the aspect ratios do not match. “Cover” fills the target resolution completely, cropping edges that fall outside the frame. “Stretch” scales the video to fill the exact dimensions, which can distort the image.

For most use cases, “contain” is the safest choice. Use “cover” when you need a clean fill without bars, like resizing landscape video to a square frame. Avoid “stretch” unless you specifically want the distortion effect.

Why Resize Video in the Browser?

Uploading a large video to a remote resizer wastes bandwidth twice: once for the upload, once for the download. This tool skips both. It uses WebCodecs to re-encode at the new resolution directly on your GPU. Processing is fast, and your video stays on your machine the entire time.

You can also crop your video to change the visible region, or trim it to shorten the duration. For professional captioning workflows, explore Velocaption. Browse all free tools on the tools page.
