How to Compress a Video Online

Drop your video into the compressor above and pick a quality preset. The tool re-encodes the video at a lower bitrate using your device’s hardware encoder, then gives you a smaller MP4 to download. No upload. No queue. No watermark.

This is useful for reducing file sizes before emailing, uploading to social media, or embedding on a website. A 200 MB screen recording can shrink to under 30 MB at medium quality with no visible difference at normal playback size. Need to resize the dimensions too? Use the video resizer.

Understanding Video Compression

Video compression works by removing redundant information between frames. The H.264 codec used here stores full keyframes at intervals and encodes the differences in between. Lower bitrate means more aggressive compression, which eventually causes visible artifacts like blocking and banding.

The five quality presets map to specific bitrate targets. “High” preserves near-original quality. “Low” prioritizes small file size. For most sharing use cases, “Medium” strikes the right balance. The encoder runs on your GPU via WebCodecs, so compression is fast even for long videos.

Why Compress Video in the Browser?

Cloud-based compressors upload your entire video to a remote server, process it, and send it back. That is slow for large files and a privacy risk for sensitive content. This tool processes everything locally. Your video never leaves your device.
