What is a WebVTT File?
Web Video Text Tracks (WebVTT), commonly saved as a .vtt file, is the industry-standard format for displaying subtitles and captions alongside HTML5 video. Supported natively by all modern web browsers through the <track> element.
How to Fix Common WebVTT Errors
- Missing WEBVTT Header: Every valid file must begin with
WEBVTTon the first line. - Timestamp Dots vs. Commas: WebVTT requires periods (
00:01:05.500), not SRT-style commas. - Cue Separator Spacing: The separator must be exactly
-->with spaces on both sides. - Missing Blank Lines: Each cue must be separated by at least one blank line.
WebVTT vs SRT
While both formats handle timed text, WebVTT supports advanced text styling, positioning, and chapter metadata. If converting SRT to VTT, you must add the WEBVTT header and replace all timestamp commas with periods.
