What is an SRT File?

SubRip Subtitle (SRT), commonly saved as an .srt file, is the most universally supported plain-text format for video subtitles and closed captions. An SRT file consists of sequential text blocks separated by blank lines, mapping specific text to precise video timecodes.

How to Fix Common SRT Formatting Errors

  • Incorrect Timestamp Commas: SRT requires a comma (,) to separate seconds from milliseconds (e.g., 00:01:05,500). Using a period will invalidate the file.
  • Broken Arrow Separators: The separator must be exactly --> with a single space on both sides.
  • Missing or Non-Sequential Indices: Every block must begin with an incrementing integer on its own line.
  • Missing Blank Lines: Each block must be separated by at least one blank line.

Standard SRT Timecode Format

1
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:04,500
This is the first subtitle line.

2
00:00:05,000 --> 00:00:08,250
This is the second subtitle line.
